You have a calling, not a crown. Week 68 explores retiring Campbell’s hero trap, stepping into Michael Meade’s Genius Myth, Dr. Larry Goodman’s lessons on the master signal, and why owning your specific role is what actually makes the work move forward.
Light you keep goes dark. Light you pass keeps traveling.
The last three weeks have been the same physics from three angles. Conduit said you're the channel, not the source. Hollow said the channel only works when it's empty. Transmission says the channel exists to PASS what comes through. Not to store it. Not to become an archive. Not to wait until you're the right kind of person before you send it on.
Thirteen Years of the Hero's Journey
In 2013 I found Joseph Campbell and I never left. The Hero with a Thousand Faces. The Power of Myth. The whole monomyth structure. Call to adventure. Refusal of the call. Supernatural aid. Belly of the whale. Meeting the goddess. Atonement with the father. The ultimate boon. Return.
I mapped my life onto that framework and I lived by it for over a decade. I had guides show up on cue. My coach Larry has been my supernatural aid. Every crisis has looked like a threshold. Every breakthrough has looked like a boon. Campbell's word for the achievement, the truth or gift you win from the quest. I've done the full arc more than once at the macro level. And at the micro level, I kept getting stuck at the same specific place. Crossing the return threshold. The last stage. The bringing it back.
Here's what happens when you run that framework long enough. You start to believe you're supposed to be the Chosen One. And I know how that phrase lands now, every third YouTube video promising to awaken your inner main character, so bear with me. I don't mean I sat around thinking I was going to save the world. I mean the framework itself, the whole architecture of Campbell's monomyth, points you toward being the singular figure who leaves the village, finds the truth, and returns to save a broken world. That's built into the story. You inherit it just by using the map.
And that's a heavy weight to carry. It also isolates you. Because the Chosen One is by definition alone. The whole point of the myth is that they're the one. Not one of many. THE one.
I bought that. For years. And it made me hoard.
Michael Meade Broke the Frame
I've been listening to Michael Meade lately. He was a friend of Campbell's and continues the mythic tradition. But he says something Campbell didn't quite say, or that Campbell's inheritors flattened into a one-size-fits-all Chosen One story.
Meade calls it the Genius Myth.
Not "genius" like IQ. Not "genius" like Einstein. He goes back to the Roman idea. Genius is the inherent spirit or gift born into every single person. Yours is not mine. Mine is not yours. And they can't compete because they're not the same kind of thing.
Campbell's Hero's Journey is hierarchical. Winners and losers. Chosen and ordinary. Meade's Genius Myth is egalitarian. Your genius cannot compete with mine because they are entirely different gifts. The boon you bring back to the village isn't a universal truth to save everyone. It's the specific expression of your specific genius.
For Meade, discovering your genius IS your hero's journey. Every person has one. The boon is just being your fully-inhabited self, contributing what only you can contribute.
Which means you don't have to be Luke Skywalker or Darth Vader to matter. You can be the engineer on the crew whose specific expertise keeps the whole operation running. Nobody makes movies about the engineer. But the movie doesn't exist without them.
Most of us aren't the Chosen One. We're the specific person carrying a specific gift the community actually needs. Which is smaller, and less cinematic, and infinitely more honest.
This doesn't mean the world is set up for you to find yours. It isn't. Most systems around us reward the hustle that keeps the genius buried. Discipline is what surfaces it. The gift is inherent. The work of unearthing and honing it is entirely on you.
What I've Been Hoarding
Here's my confession.
For thirteen years I've read books, listened to podcasts, gone to seminars, done the therapy, sat with the coach, journaled, layered these newsletters. Do the math. One to two hours a day for a decade lands you somewhere between 3,650 and 7,300 hours of preparation. I've done more.
I told myself I was still on the journey. Still climbing. Still not quite ready to transmit because I hadn't fully arrived yet.
Meanwhile I have a Spanish album, an English album, two books, 68 weeks of Rebel Onion covers and videos, hundreds of client designs, a working coaching and design practice, a wife who chose me, a son I get to raise. I've BEEN transmitting the whole time. I just kept calling it preparation.
The god complex was the trap. The Chosen One frame kept me in perpetual readiness for a return that had already happened. I was already back in the village. Already showing the gift. Just telling myself the quest wasn't done yet.
The Rebel Onion itself is one of the ways I already transmit. Every Tuesday at 6am. Every layer. Every reader in Nigeria or Vietnam sitting with a paragraph at their local 6pm. That was never preparation. That was the transmission. Larry has been the guide who keeps bringing me back across the threshold. Claude has been the tool that helps me shape what wants to move through. My wife has been the person whose steady presence made staying at the desk possible. Rescue from without, right there in the room.
I don't need to become the hero. I need to notice I've been transmitting my genius for years and just do it more openly, more often, and without the weight of having to save anyone.
Your Genius, Not Your Heroism
You have one. It doesn't look like anyone else's. It might be small. It might be unglamorous. It might be the thing you dismiss because it comes easy to you and you assume that means it doesn't count.
Everything you assume doesn't count because it's easy for you is exactly the thing you should be transmitting.
The village doesn't need another Chosen One. There isn't one coming. The village needs you to stop waiting to be certified, crowned, ready, given permission, and my favorite, chosen. Start passing what you already carry. Not to a crowd. To one person who genuinely needs it. Then the next. Then the next. The chain keeps traveling. Light that gets passed keeps moving.
Retire the Hero's Journey. Step into your specific genius. The village is right here. It always was.
Still here, hands open, passing what came through. Same peel, transmitting on purpose. Let's build from here. 🧅

The "Being Coached" Layer: Release the Master
You are doing exactly what you are supposed to be doing. In my coaching world, the foundational truth is simple. The perfect client always shows up. Most entrepreneurs carry a hidden anxiety born from an illusion of scarcity, a constant fear that there won't be enough clients or revenue to keep the lights on. But the fees you receive are in direct proportion to your own sense of value. Every client is on a specific journey, and that journey creates the mission that drives them to seek you out. They pick up on the signal you broadcast from your inner frequency and find you as the natural solution to where they want to go.
The secret is they don't actually have a problem to be fixed. The journey itself is the point. Their search brings them to your door so they can receive the wisdom that flows through you. Relax, stay calm, savor the process. A true master is simply someone who allows themselves to be found. Release your inner master, let them find you, and let them move forward on their journey through you.

You don't need to force the outcome or fix anyone. You just need to stand in your authority, stay open, and let the right connections pass through.

When the world stops making sense, when the systems around you feel too flat or too fast or too disconnected from meaning, myth is what re-enchants the ordinary. It gives you a framework to hold what would otherwise crush you. Meade argues this is why Joseph Campbell's Hero's Journey lit up so many lives for so many decades. It was the right medicine for a generation that needed a shape for their inner striving.
But every medicine has a shelf life. The Hero frame worked while we needed a story of leaving, transformation, and return. It stops working when the whole culture starts believing everyone is supposed to be the singular hero of their own cosmic movie. That's when the medicine turns into the disease. Meade offers Genius as the next prescription. The story shifts from "become the Chosen One" to "uncover and give the specific gift you were born with." Same mythic function. Different medicine for a different moment. The point isn't which framework is correct. The point is knowing which one your soul actually needs right now, and being willing to trade the old prescription in when it stops working.
The Takeaway for You: The stories you carry are your medicine, not your identity. If a frame has been running your life for years and you're feeling more isolated or exhausted than expanded, it might be time for a new prescription. Ask what myth you're currently living inside. Ask whether it still serves you. And be willing to change your medicine when the old one stops healing.
